Seminar Director: Otto Kernberg, MD Schedule: April 6 to June 15, 2005 – 11 sessions Location: 21 East 40th Street, Penthouse Fee: $750, for registration before March 20, The treatment of patients with severe personality disorders, such as borderline and narcissistic, has been one of the most challenging areas in mental health. Many clinicians have found therapy with these patients intimidating and discouraging. Therapists often have considered that stabilization of symptoms without fundamental change in the underlying personality structure is the best possible outcome. However, an increasing body of clinical experience and research shows that transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) can help patients with severe personality disorders change their personality structure. TFP is a form of psychodynamic psychotherapy modified to address patients with these disorders. It has been developed and is being researched by a team at the Personality Disorders Institute of the Weill College of Medicine at Cornell University under the leadership of Dr.Otto Kernberg. The seminar will introduce the theory and techniques of TFP to help therapists provide effective treatment for borderline, narcissistic, and other severe personality disorders. The faculty will use process material from their own cases to demonstrate the treatment. We will then discuss cases brought in by the participants to illustrate the principles of the therapy. Registration is open to psychiatrists, psychologists, and clinical social workers, and will be limited to ten participants to allow for active participation.
